With Element's powerful audio delivery system mobile users must temporarily extend their screen timeout to avoid screen lock / audio stoppage. Luckily, it's super easy! Here's how:
Android: Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Screen Off → 30 Minutes
iPhone / iOS: Settings -> Display & Brightness → Auto Lock → Never
When you are finished with your session you can go back to the original setting.
Have you seen one of the recent viral videos demonstrating the power of "cymatics?" In case you haven't, a sand covered metal plate and soundboard are the lone ingredients in this simple yet impressive experiment. And as the experimenter adjusts the frequency (measured in Hz) to certain levels on the audio spectrum, in response, the vibrating sand would "magically arrange" itself into near perfect geometric patterns. It was the incredible uniqueness and beauty of the "snowflake-like" or "crystalline" patterns (at their respective Hz frequency) that made the experiment so compelling. While the experiment possibly raises more questions than it answers, it does provide some powerfully illustrative evidence to the idea that all sound is (NOT!) created equal. And that, just perhaps, certain sounds vibrated at certain frequencies can indeed impact consciousness in certain ways. The power of EquiSync Element is that you can choose any frequency / combination of frequencies (resonance) that you like! There are no limits.
As the name suggests, EquiSync Element's powerful "Frequency Finder" (FF) tool is designed to help you quickly and easily find highly correlated & connected frequencies. For example, if your research suggests that the well-known 528 Hz frequency is quite powerful (which it is!) then you can enter that into the "Base Hz" option of the FF tool. Upon entry you will find suggestions sorted by either value or degree of correlation (rank). If you want to multilayer the powerful 528 Hz frequency with another in the 200-400 Hz range (which we classify as a "Zone 2" carrier) then the top suggestions would be 264 Hz (528 x 1⁄2 = 264), 396 Hz (528 x 3⁄4), and so forth. This can also be done for the much lower brainwave Hz ranges (ex. 528 / 60 = 8.8 Hz alpha wave, or 528 / 144 = 3.67 Hz delta wave). The idea here is to build an entire multilayered harmonically resonant session based on just a single frequency. The options are limitless!
The reason binaural audio works is because your brain recognizes the difference between two separate tones and entrains accordingly. For instance, if a tone of 523 Hz was played in your right ear and 528 Hz in your left then your brain would synchronize itself to the difference between the two (in this case it would be 5 Hz, a theta brainwave, which would be quite relaxing). Of course, you can also modulate a 528 hz carrier to "pulse" (i.e. isochronic tone / monaural beat) every 5hz to get the same effect. This much higher (audible) frequency is known as the "carrier frequency" and is an essential component of brainwave entrainment.
You will find that, when creating a multi-layered, multi-frequency meditation soundscape — a certain structure works best. A key component of this is the "volume" that we set for each layer. In other words, rather than weighing all layers equally (@ 100%) it's actually far more pleasing to the ear (& helpful for deep meditation) to adjust each layer to your own personal taste. Luckily, EquiSync Element's "Master Volume" tool allows you to set a precise volume for each layer! While Element's powerful auto-creation tool (i.e. the "Create" menu item) does have built-in volume varying capabilities — we strongly suggest fine-tuning whatever result it provides. You may find certain frequency ranges / zones to be more pleasing than others so adjust accordingly. Perhaps more art than science, we suggest experimenting to find what works best for you.
Binaural Beats: What are binaural beats and how do they work? Put simply, when two slightly different tones are introduced, one per ear, after a certain amount of time the brainwaves will mirror the difference between the tones. For example, if a 200 Hz tone is played in your right ear and 190 Hz in your left, after a few minutes your brainwaves will naturally entrain to the difference between these two tones (200 - 190 = 10 Hz). In this case, with 10 Hz being an "alpha" brainwave, assuming successful entrainment has occurred, we could say, with confidence, that the first stage of meditation had been achieved. Known by the scientific community as the "Frequency Following Response (FFR)" effect, this response forms the basis for brainwave entrainment.
Advanced Binaural Beats: Many binaural beat users find that, assuming maximum binaural beat integrity is maintained (very important!), a far deeper meditative state can be achieved through certain upgrades to the audio. For this reason, EquiSync Deepereum & EquiSync Element both include two enhanced binaural beat options:
Vertical Modulation: With this feature implemented, the waveform will resemble more of a monaural beat than a binaural beat. However, unlike a monaural beat, the left & right audio channels maintain their frequency (Hz) difference (meaning that it still works like a binaural beat). Many users find this modification to be extra-effective (versus standard binaurals), and therefore, very helpful for deep meditation.
Horizontal Modulation: Instead of a static left / right volume (as with standard binaurals), the horizontal modulation feature rhythmically oscillates the volume from side to side, ear to ear (like a bilateral beat). Assuming that maximum audio quality & left-right channel separation is maintained (as done with our program, this is very important!), many users find this feature to be a powerful upgrade over standard binaural beats. Like its vertically modulated counterpart, horizontally modulated binaurals are super effective for deepening the meditative state.
Whether it's standard or enhanced binaural beats, you are encouraged to find what works best for you!
Isochronic Tones / Monaural Beats: In simple terms, an isochronic tone / monaural beat is a pulse of sound turned on and off quickly and evenly. Compared to monaural beats (which have a more smooth and flowing sound quality to them), isochronic tones have a sharper and steeper sound quality. Because of their extra intensity when at full strength (as compared to other entrainment methods), Element allows you to set the isochronic tone intensity to low, medium, or high. Please note that Element's isochronic tone "Low" setting is effectively a monaural beat!
Headphone Note: Because they both work to a certain degree without headphones, isochronics and monaurals offer a bit more flexibility than binaural beats.
Bilateral Beats: Instead of an up / down modulation of the waveform (like isochronic tones), bilateral beats actually go from side to side, ear to ear. Relatively new to brainwave entrainment, bilateral beats are quickly gaining popularity within the meditation community! We suggest experimenting with both isochronic tones and bilateral beats and, of course, focusing on what you like / what leads to the deepest meditative state!
The first chart below illustrates the basic waveform of a monaural beat and isochronic tone at a 10 Hz frequency (alpha brainwave), respectively. The second chart illustrates the basic delivery of binaural beats vs monaural beats. The Element isochronic tone "Low" setting is the same as monaural beat!
Combo: For achieving maximum meditation depth (through this sound technology), some have theorized that a multitiered, multipronged entrainment approach to be the best approach. The "Combo" option was created with this idea in mind. Instead of just one type of brainwave entrainment mode controlling all carrier frequencies at once (as with the other options on the interface), this feature allows each carrier frequency to have its own respective entrainment method (whether binaural beats, monaural beats, or isochronic tones). The distinct and pleasing quality of the combo method's sound makes it a natural fan favorite.
Note: The "Combo" feature is only available when the "Harmonic MultiLayering" option is enabled (and disabled when "PureTone" is selected).
EquiSync Element's true superpower is that it allows you to create a 100% harmonically-resonant, multi-layered brainwave entrainment meditation soundscape — quickly. When you add in the ability to cycle between certain highly resonant frequency combinations (i.e. moving between 528 Hz & 396 Hz every 6 minutes) with multiple layers all doing the same thing — then you have the ultimate recipe for super deep meditation! Why combine multiple frequencies instead of just focusing on one? While we won't go into (quite complex) music theory here, you can learn more about how/why this is done by googling "fundamental pitch," "overtones," and "harmonic series." It's ultimately certain frequency combinations (resonance) that bring about the most profound "meditation deepening" effect which is what multi-layering is all about. You are encouraged to explore EquiSync Element's near-infinite options to discover what works best in your practice!
In the same way that certain musical notes are generally seen as "more pleasing" than others, certain carrier frequency "zones" are also preferred when creating a multi-layered deep meditation soundscape. Moreover, certain frequency zones also work better with certain forms of brainwave entrainment. For example, binaural beats don't really work so well when the carrier frequency is about about 900 Hz or so. So keep this in mind when creating your soundscapes. We have outlined the basics below:
If you don't know where to start then we recommend focusing on frequencies that are most popular among the meditation community (like the 432 Hz scale / 528 Hz / Solfeggio Tones) and all of their derivatives — which you can find by using the "Frequency Finder" tool. We also recommend doing your own frequency "homework" outside of our platform (via the web) as there is a whole world of interesting anecdotes / evidence about the potential benefits of particular frequencies. Keep in mind that this field of research, that is, how certain sound(s) vibrated at certain frequencies impact human consciousness in certain (perhaps very positive) ways - is largely new, and therefore, largely unexplored by science.
For reference the Solfeggio Tones are as follows: 174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852, 963
